Local Business Development Program
During operations, a programme to promote local involvement, economic growth and capacity building in communities was in progress. The Kayelekera Mine introduced a work experience programme for young Malawian undergraduates with the first participant, a Karonga-based accountancy student, spending three weeks gaining hands-on-experience with the Kayelekera Mine's Commercial and Administration Department in June.
Paladin also supported the UK-based MicroLoan Foundation by funding an expansion of the foundation’s activities in the Karonga region to provide micro-loans to 23 groups totalling around 300 local rural women for small scale co-operative business ventures in the Karonga region, boosting farming family incomes by encouraging expansion of small business initiatives.
Since moving the operation to care and maintenance, limited opportunities exist to engage in this programme. Local procurement remains a priority where possible.
