Mkakatavu Vocational Training
This project offers vocational training courses to the older children to provide them the means to earn money to look after their younger brothers and sisters. The courses last six months and include carpentry, tailoring and bricklaying. At the end of these courses the students kept the tools they had used so they can continue their trade. At the end of the training courses they were also offered a 5-day small business training course and mentoring to assist them in setting up their own business.
A survey was carried out in April 2014 whereby 53% of those trained were found to be involved in and benefitting from activities related to their training. Between January 2011 and November 2016, a total of 118 boys and girls had completed the various training on offer.
Due to the inability of the CBO to manage the sustainability projects that were set up to fund the vocational training FEPAC support to Mkakatavu was terminated in February 2018.
